TAREA LEARNING EVENT ON TANZANIA FINANCE ACT 2022

On 30th June 2022, the United Republic of Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance and Planning enacted amendments to some sections of the Finance Act, amendments that came into effect on 1st July 2022. Some of the amended sections affected the renewable energy sector.

There was a need for the members of TAREA to understand the amendments and how to comply with them.

Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA) invited the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), and the Experts from the wing of Consumers Education to translate the amendments and inform the HS Codes of the solar technologies.

Members were presented with all amendments and explained in the detail the newly inserted section 85.07 that introduced Excise Duty on lead acid batteries, charged at 5% for locally manufactured lead acid batteries and 10% for imported ones.

Thanks to the financial contribution provided by USAID through Shell Foundation and GOGLA.

Impacts of Solar Water Pumping: Case of Preiswerk Girls, Ifakara

Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA) partnered with URBIS Foundation, a German NGO to support the Preiswerk Girls Secondary School, in Ifakara, Tanzania with a solar photovoltaic pumping system 1.2kWp that delivers 20,000 litres of water per day.

The school used a diesel generator to run the water pump. The cost of running a diesel generator made the water supply at the school unreliable. The students had to collect water from the stream near the school. The water from the stream was not safe, Students were often sick from typhoid and Urinary Tract Infections (UTI).

Also, the use of a diesel generator polluted the environment through the emissions of greenhouse gases.

The installation of the solar water pumping system changed the lives of the girls. The water which is pumped from the protected water borehole is safe and has resulted in the eradication of typhoid and UTI. The girls can live hygienically.

Preiswerk Girls plant trees and grow vegetables. The emission of 14,086KgCO2/year has been avoided.

TAREA Participates in Implementing Renewable Energy Training Program for Uganda

Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA) participates in the realization of the “Uganda Capacity Development Program for Renewable Energy” financed by Sida and implemented by LIFE Academy of Karlstad, Sweden. TAREA has been a partner of LIFE Academy in implementing training programs since 2013.

The main objective of the training program is to contribute to strengthening the conditions for investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, with in-depth technical skills to provide modern and sustainable energy systems in Uganda. This includes all forms of renewable energy such as solar, wind, hydro, bio (including waste-to-energy) and geothermal energy. The Renewable Energy Program is thus expected to contribute to poverty reduction through increased access to affordable and reliable renewable energy and access to electricity for people living in poverty.

On-site training in Entebbe

25 energy experts in Uganda are participating in the training that runs from February 2022 to January 2023.

TAREA participates in another renewable energy training program implemented by the LIFE Academy “Global Capacity Development Programme on Renewable Energy” which consists of participants from Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
